Ms. Chelsea Shields
Hey Julie! Just saw your message! I still use some of the stuff you gave us from our training last year! We love you and KCM!
I love this! Math History!! I remember back in my Lindsey Wilson days, we spray painted lima beans to use n our future classrooms.
My son had spray painted ladybugs to count when in kindergarten. He is a grown man with a beard now:) Ha! Ha! Math has always been about hands on learning.
Love the math rack! I see so many of our MITs using them effectively with students. Powerful learning tool.
Math rack is always my goto tool when we are stuck with numbers with my kids. I love how it shows tens and ones structure. I also love using it to show addition and multiplication sentences.
I love that the rekenrek is often the tool my students ask for when solving a problem.
Love the link to SMPs. XXOO
My kinder love the rekenrek!
I've used it with multiplication as well to show multiple equal groups and use skip counting.
It really is such a versatile tool!
I have used a rekenrek to start number talks(create a pattern of beads) and the students make so many numbers with it and then explain how they see that number or math problem.
I love to see the light in my students' faces when they see the number inside the number, and when they can see the five and 1 more and what they makes.
I like the rekenreks in 2nd grade because it helps my struggling students to see patterns and helps them to add within 100 successfully
This is a great tool to teach large doubles and make connections to the 10 plus. I also use the 100 bead rack to model how much more to the next decuple. Ten more/ten less. And you can use it for arrays with multiplication.
I love using the bead rack because it readily shows the array model and the quantities embedded within.
Love flip flopping!
The assessing and advancing questions are incredibly important in activities like this!
I love hearing the sound of a classroom!
Great for doubles and doubles plus one.
My students use the Rekenrek for all kinds of KNPIG games and activities!
I love the virtual number rack on Math Learning Center. I used it daily in 1st grade and have used it this year with 3rd through 5th graders with multiplication
Is that video the link on your slide?
I love the virtual manipulatives!
We used the Pipe cleaner and the two color beads.
I made bead racks on white boards for my students for Christmas a couple years!
The virtual manipulatives have been awesome! My kids are so impressed with them.
I do make and takes of rekenrek for my math night every year and show the parents how to use them at home!
@Amy Williams - you also did bead racks at family night this year! We still have to put Leah's together. lol
Bead racks as Christmas presents! Genius!
Mandy - I love that you have your rekenrek with you!

Nasco has small rekenreks I give out at Open House and Family Conferences.
I love the idea of giving the small ones out at Open House!
I liked the idea of not connecting completely
My husband made it for me several years ago with skewer sticks, craft beads, and scrap pieces of wood.
We use Dreambox at our school and it will pose questions like; make 95 in the few moves. Which is wanting them to dump the whole rack and only move 5 back.
@Mandy- that's great!
is there a link to have virtual place dice - i have one for regular dice
place value dice
It reinforces place value counting tens and ones
Love using the virtual app while teaching intervention small groups too using ipads.
I often partner the math rack with bundles and sticks as well.
Reminder to all- presentation and resource can be found here
All videos, presentations and handouts are there for you
